Put the 'falling' back in fall : finding, using, and creating fall leaf overlays.

Hey, You! Thanks for joining me :)

I’m Fraidy Shimon, owner of Peppermint Photography and The Editing Bootcamp, and I’ve created this tutorial to show you how to use leaf overlays so you can get that dreamy leaf confetti look on any image you choose.

In this video, I’ll walk you through what to look out for when choosing fall leaf overlays, where to find them, and how to use them.

Ready?

So I have this beautiful fall photo and I’d love to add some floating leaves to add that dreamy confetti-like leaf effect.

So first on where to find the leaves.

  1. If you’re late enough in the season that the leaves are falling freely, see if you can have someone shake a branch so a bunch of them fall together. Make sure you have your shutter speed set fast enough to freeze the motion, and your aperture low enough to blur the background so you don’t have to cut out each individual leaf. Try to take the picture from a similar angle as the portrait you want to overlay. Then you can use that as a background change. You can even clone or copy leaves so you have more, or use more than one image.

  2. If you’re buying a leaf overlay (quick google search, etsy has lots of them) Make sure that the type of leaf you’re buying matches the trees your subject is under, if applicable, and any leaves on the ground. Match oak with oak, maple with maple, etc.

Once you have the leaf overlay you’re going to use, drag and drop it on top of your portrait and size appropriately. Then mask of the parts you don’t want to see.

Ta-da!

there you go!
